How will recruitment differ in 2021?

Irrespective of sector, talent acquisition and recruitment look very different this year and will continue to do so as we continue into 2021.

How is it different? The short answer is digital. We may have used digital platforms previously but not with the frequency we do now. Thanks to the pandemic, the traditional hiring process has seen many challenges and recruiters, employers and candidates have all scrambled to adapt and deliver a positive remote experience.

The pandemic not only forced businesses to accelerate their digital plans, it changed the way businesses hire and also altered the traits they are looking for in 2021 across almost all industries.

Whilst businesses have adopted a number of digital hiring tools changing how they hire, there has also been a subtle yet significant shift in the way business think about who to hire.  Recruitment will continue to change dramatically. And these are the three areas that will dominate recruitment and hiring in 2021.

  1. Digital hiring technology

With remote working taking a stronghold, geography is less important than it used to be.  Employers are now casting a wider net for remote workers which means not only do they have access to a greater pool of candidates, they also have an increased workload in sifting through applications and CVs. Technologies such as automation and AI are effective time-saving tools and, used properly, offer improvements and efficiency at all stages of the hiring process.

Whilst AI has received a bad press in some hiring communities, businesses are learning they can achieve a great candidate experience without losing the human connection.

  1. Rethinking behavioural traits

COVID has forced companies to reassess core capabilities and the qualities which make an employee successful in today’s working world.

Adept candidates in 2021 will demonstrate strong communication skills, be comfortable with technology and have a flexible approach.

Recruiters using digital technology to screen for these traits will streamline the hiring process and ultimately have a positive impact on recruitment and retention in the long term.

  1. Staying personal

Now you may be thinking how.  Stay with me because there is method in my madness.  A combination of automation & digital connectivity saves time on the repetitive process driven tasks, allowing people to be more available and build personal connections.  An effective hiring process includes people at both ends focusing on the important aspect of hiring, being present.

My business continues to offer a valuable service in a changing environment and communication is key to us. Digital tools used properly, not only eliminate bias through data objectivity but support visual interviews. The reality is that teams are being assembled based on skills rather than geography. One thing is very clear. Businesses who embrace offering an enjoyable digital candidate experience will have the advantage.
